General Background Information[]
Journi (Jo) Mackenzie grew up on the East Coast, the only child of a single mom who worked around the clock to keep a roof over their head. She has been used to providing for herself since she was a kid, finding ways to make use of things other people might throw away, whether it was food, toys or electronics. She always loved tinkering with things and figuring out how they work, taking them apart and rebuilding them bigger and better. In high school, Jo planned on applying to engineering programs, but when her mother died from a fungal meningitis infection, she became obsessed with learning how such a small organism could destroy a person. She completed her degree in biology before completing the first two years of medical school. However, once clinical rotations began, she decided she preferred microscopes and cell cultures to people and transferred to a research-based graduate program.
Having recently completed her PhD in cell biology, Jo came to Los Santos to begin a post-doc research program in immunology. Spending most of her waking hours in the lab, she was unaware of the hell breaking loose in the city until it was too late. Used to fending for herself and making something out of nothing, she has been building a small base and scavenging around the university, avoiding the infected by staying quiet and alone. She would much rather play it safe and create a plan rather than rush head-long into a situation, and although she felt safe where she was, she knew she had to venture into the city soon to find other survivors and more supplies if she wanted to survive.
